Views wanted on Sandwell’s highways and transport services

Residents across Sandwell are being asked for their views on highways and transport services as part of a national survey.

Anyone who receives the National Highways and Transport Public Satisfaction survey in the post is being urged to fill it in.

The answers will be compared with the views of other members of the public across England and Scotland.

In last year’s survey, Sandwell was ranked top out of the 12 West Midlands councils for overall public satisfaction across highway and transportation services. Sandwell was also named in the top three metropolitan councils for public satisfaction on work such as gritting, pothole filling and road maintenance.

All this week, Sandwell Council has been running #HighwaysWeek –  a celebration of the work of the council’s highways team. The week has highlighted major highways schemes and the work of staff and contractors, as well as an insight into the varied roles and responsibilities of the team.

Tweets with the #HighwaysWeek hashtag have reached more than one million Twitter accounts throughout the week.

Among the big schemes announced this week are:

  • A new toucan crossing on the A4123 Wolverhampton Road
  • A new highways permit scheme which will see utility companies and developers having to apply for permission to dig up roads
  • The installation of 11,000 LED energy-efficient streetlights
  • A £1.1million scheme to improve Carters Green in West Bromwich
  • A new red route in Oldbury to improve road safety outside three schools

The questionnaire will be sent to a minimum random sample of at least 3,300 Sandwell residents from today (Friday 7 June), followed by a reminder. Local and national results will be published in late October 2019.

Residents who receive the questionnaire can complete the survey online if they prefer – there will be a web URL on the survey.

Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for sustainable transport Councillor Jackie Taylor said: “We want people to tell us what they think of our highways services so we can see what our residents value and where we should be investing our budgets.

“This helps us assess how we are performing and gives the public an opportunity to say which services they think the council should prioritise and improve.

“We have used #HighwaysWeek to showcase some of the great work our highways team does and it’s been really successful, there are some really positive things happening.

“Last year, in this survey, we were placed third for overall public satisfaction across highway and transportation services out of 31 metropolitan councils. This was a great achievement and recognition that people do notice the work we put into our roads.”

Sandwell Council is one of 111 local authorities to sign up to a survey that asks residents exactly the same questions across the whole country.

The survey is being run for the 11th year and helps councils compare results, share in best practice and identify further opportunities to work together in the future.
